Ride Report – Long Beach

Cool morning with blue skies. Finally, sunny day. Perfect riding weather. All the flood control waterways were full and flowing. All the settling ponds were full too. The dam at the upper Rio Hondo flooded the bike trail. The dam at the lower Rio Hondo was filled too. I have never seen that one with water in it.

Trevor, Peter D., Peter C., Dave M., James, Lynda, Maria, Carrie, Julian, John, Gregg, Joe.

Maria was riding a new Tri Bike, getting ready for St. George. Lookin’ good!

Mile 0: Start at Starbucks Sierra Madre. Waited a few minutes for the crew to assemble. Rode down Santa Anita to Longden.

Mile 5: Arcadia 3 hole. Pick up a couple more clubbers at the parking lot. The dam flooded the entrance to bike path so, we took a detour back to Santa Anita to hop on the Rio Hondo Bike Trail. Rode trail down to Whittier Narrows Rec Area.

Mile 14: Crossed San Gabriel Blvd. Turned onto Lincoln Ave. Road was closed due to flooding, but wasn’t really flooded. The bike path however was way underwater. The Dam at the Rio Hondo was filled. Amazing. It was partially open and sending lots of water to accompany us, all the way down to Long Beach.

Mile 20: Rode trail through Montebello, Bell Gardens. Cross over the wash at the Bridge at John Anson Park.

Mile 22: Rio Hondo Bike Trail merges onto Los Angeles River Bike Trail. Ride south through Downey, Lynwood, Paramount, Compton, Carson, out to Long Beach. Some hardened mud in the underpasses. Thankfully, it dried out enough to roll through.

Mile 35: Ride end of the bike trail, Starbucks at Long Beach on Golden Shore, right onto Ocean Blvd, left on Magnolia. Starbucks for coffee and refuel and regroup.

Then, the long slog back. I think I went a bit too hard on the way down. I tried hanging on with Gregg, Dave. Trevor may or may not have had an incident with a road sign on the way back.

Great Ride.
